One of the best inventions of our modern way of living is plastic. The convenience it has brought to our lifestyles is immeasurable. Plastics are indispensable in whatever form, type and grade they take and fill. From pillows to cars, they have made it possible to combine style, durability and ease. From the cars we drive, the utensils we use, the computers we work with, the recreational equipment used for entertainment, the buildings we live in all include plastic components.

The Poly Plastic

The majority of plastics or poly plastic in use today is made from nonrenewable fossil fuels. These sources contain hydrocarbons which provide the small building blocks of the longer carbon molecular chain called polymers. These long chains of carbon atoms give plastics their unique properties that distinguish them from other materials like metals whose molecular structures are shorter.

One of the distinguishing properties of plastics is its lower density compared to other materials such as wood and metals. They are lighter with densities ranging from 0.9 to 2.2 g/cm3. Unlike metals or wood, plastics do not rust or rot. Plastics are also produced in any color. They can be manufactured as translucent, opaque or as clear as glass.

olymer molecules may also be combined with other smaller chains that may consist of elements like silicon, fluorine, nitrogen and chlorine. When polymer molecules bond with smaller side chains such as chlorine, the result is PVC or polyvinyl chloride. PVCs are the most versatile plastics ever used. The addition of chlorine to its long carbon chain gives this type of plastic its distinguishing characteristics of hardness and resistance to heat.

The Use of Plastics

Plastics are extensively used in many industries such as the automobile, aerospace, packaging, and electrical and construction industries. Nearly 12% of the weight of an average car is composed of plastics. Other practical contributions of plastics are in home furnishings and domestic products. In specialized fields like the health industry, plastics are used to make medical instruments, optical lenses and dental fillings.

In the office, filing different sets of documents is made easier by plastic pockets which come in different sizes. Commonly used plastic file containers are those of A3 to A5 sizes. Plastics are also made into binding covers that are water resistant for the protection of the office files. Tissue-dispensers, business card holders, expanding folders with plastic pockets for cards and compact discs are now also available.

Clear vinyl or polyvinyl chloride plastics are widely used as windows for boats, cars and other marine equipments that require visibility or optical clarity. They are also produced in sheets treated and coated with the UV blocking technology. Depending on its thickness, clear vinyl is also used as covering in greenhouses. Scratch and mildew resistant clear vinyls are available in either 48 or 54-inch wide sheets with thickness from 0.020-0.040 ga.

Clear vinyl sheets and fabrics are also fashioned into tablecloth, curtains, bags, and chair protectors. In almost any need for distortion-free visibility, clear vinyls have come to be used for its lightweight and reliable strength.
